The Bear & Son 114B butterfly knife features a durable black epoxy coating over the tough alloy handles. Their skeletonized design reduces weight while adding additional tactile feedback while flipping. It has a stainless steel clip point blade with a plain edge and single tang pin. In the way of mid-range butterfly knives, this model is a great buy and it's made in the USA.
Customer Reviews
The materials, fit and finish are good. The handles feel good and the blade was reasonably sharp out of the box. The grind is a little disappointing, but hey, it's an inexpensive knife.
The latch, just like on the old Benchmade WeeHawk I had back in the day like to swing up and catch the blade. Not much one can do about that with a non-spring loaded design.
This thing flips fast and smooth. Yes, there is some handle play--so what? If it was a $500 knife, I'd be annoyed, for 30-odd dollars, I can live with it.
I wish I knew more than a couple flips--gotta work on that. I will say that you can't beat a latch drop with this thing for a fast opening!
So, yes, I recommend this for an intro to the balisong. Put a couple layers of Scotch tape over the edge and you have a nice trainer (ALWAYS grab the safe handle, NOT the bite handle). ;-)
